Get Extra Speed by Using "Lighter" Apps

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

You’ve done everything you could to your computer box over the years, including keeping it clean, upgrading everything possible (some RAM here, a new DVD drive there, maybe another hard drive and so on) and there’s basically nothing more you can do.

You may have entertained the idea of replacing your computer with a new one because everything is getting so slow it’s intolerable.

However you may not have to do that if you switch over to some apps that are nice and speedy.

Basic maintenance

Before tackling the task of using alternative software, it’s a good idea to “clean up” your computer first. You can do this by using free software called CCleaner, available at www.ccleaner.com. Install it, close all your open apps (except CCleaner), run this and reboot. Most people notice a notable improvement in overall operation after running this registry cleaner application. I suggest running it at least once a week.

Web browsing

Internet Explorer 7 is one of the “heaviest” (if not the heaviest) web browsers out there. Yes, it’s free but it’s also slow. Consider using free alternatives such as Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.com/firefox) or Opera (www.opera.com). Both of these browsers are well known to run circles around IE, performance-wise.

Instant messaging

The worst as far as bloated instant messaging applications go is the Yahoo! Messenger. This application is extremely “heavy” and packed full of things you probably never use. Other from-service IM clients such as Windows Live Messenger and AIM are also in desperate need of losing weight.

You can use alternative IM clients or just your web browser to accomplish the same chat capability.

Try these out:

* Trillian @ www.trillian.cc (the basic version is free)

* Pidgin @ www.pidgin.im

* Miranda @ www.miranda-im.org (one of the lightest you’ll ever use - it even works on Windows 95!)

* Digsby @ www.digsby.com

* Meebo @ www.meebo.com (web-based in-browser only)

* aMSN @ www.amsn-project.net (for Windows Live/MSN connectivity only)

* AIM Lite @ http://x.aim.com/laim (AIM only - produced by AOL but without ads and lightning quick!)

Office Applications

Ever since version “2002″ of Microsoft Office the software has become extremely bloated and slow. However you do have alternatives.

Microsoft Office 2000 - It is the luck of the draw whether you can find this software or not as it is difficult to locate (you can’t purchase it any longer). I was lucky enough to still have a copy from years ago with my valid product key and I use this suite it regularly. Remember, this is a year-2000 version so it was programmed for computers of the time. On present-day PCs this version of Office runs lightning quick and I absolutely love it. In addition, you can also achieve even greater speed if you have Microsoft Office 97. And yes, documents created by MS Office 97 are still considered “standard”, so even if you use software that old, everybody you trade documents with will be able to read them without issue.

OpenOffice @ www.openoffice.org - This is a free suite of office apps that have proven to be stable and work great. While not as speedy as MS Office 2000 it does get the job done, and you can’t beat the price tag.

AbiWord @ www.abiword.com - This is a free word processing application. It’s one of the smallest and fastest out there and works great.

ThinkFree @ www.thinkfree.com - This is a 100% web-based office suite. It looks and performs almost exactly like an installed application. You will be amazed at how good ThinkFree works.

Digital photo editing

The bundled software that came with your digital camera is usually always “heavy” on use and has a tendency to crash more often than not. Here are a few free alternatives:

Picasa @ http://picasa.google.com - Whether or not you choose to use the Picasa web service is entirely up to you, but bear in mind the editing capabilities of the free Picasa application are powerful and moreover easy.

Windows Live Photo Gallery @ http://photogallery.live.com - While not as good as Picasa, this particular app is also free and has the ability to publish photos directly to the Flickr web service that many people use (including myself).

Remember…

Before you toss that old PC out - clean it up and try some alternative lighter software. You might find that your older computer box still has a few years of life left in it after all.

Karaoke discs are just like any of our other important investments. As time progresses you will find that your collection grows. The more your collection grows ,then so is the investment you have made in it. Naturally you are going to want to do everything you can to protect that investment, and here are a few tips on how to do that.

1. If you feel that you have quite an investment in your Karaoke Disc collection then try to get a total estimate of the value. For example ,lets say you feel that you have about $1,000. invested. It may be a good idea to contact your insurance company and have these added on to your household assets. Then in the event of something unfortunate happening such as fire or theft at least your financial investment will be protected.

2. Its important where you store you discs. Think about what potential damage could come to them when you are picking out your storage area. For example are they near some place where a leak could occur. If you have them on a shelf under a window, and the window accidentally gets left open in a rain storm, is it going to reach your collection?

Karaoke For Beginners - A Guide To The World Of Karaoke & What You Should Know

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Karaoke mania is sweeping the world! Have you taken your trip up to the stage yet to belt out your favorite song to those you know and love? If not, you might just find yourself on the singing end of your nearest karaoke system very soon!

So what is this anyway? What’s the buzz about the newest karaoke player? What do you need to know to be “in the know” about this latest craze? Here are some facts, figures, lingo, and trivia you may want to know.

Karaoke is a Japanese word, made up of abbreviations of two other Japanese words. “Kara” comes from the word “karappo”, meaning empty. “Oke” comes from the word “okesutura”, meaning orchestra. So “Karaoke” literally means empty orchestra. Karaoke players play the music of the songs, without the lead vocals. So empty orchestra means you get the music without the voices.

The first system was invented in the 1970’s in Kobe, Japan, by Daisuk Inoue, a musician. He leased his player for 100 yen, and Karaoke soon became the fun thing to do. Unfortunately, he did not get a patent for his invention, and someone else went on to patent it under a different name, “Minus-One”.

As you see, his Minus-One system didn’t catch on near as well as the catchy “Karaoke”, so Daisuk still got his claim to fame. Word of Daisuk’s new machine spread, and from Japan it has now become wildly popular all across Asia, Europe, and the USA.

Perhaps karaoke players are most popular of all in Finland. Finland holds several world records. They have more karaoke bars per capita than any other place in the world. They hold the world record for the largest amount of people singing the samesong at one time: 80,000 people! What song were they singing? Hard Rock Hallelujah! Finland also holds the world record for the longest round of non-stop singing: 240 hours!

Imagine that! Now you can use your system to come up with new world records!

Karaoke Lingo:

What’s a new craze without it’s own specialized vocabulary to go with it? Here are some words to know:

Karaoke Player - this is the karaoke machine itself. It plays songs, or music without the words. The lyrics are shown on a monitor so people can still sing the song even if they don’t know the words.

Spinning Karaoke - this is cycling on stationary bicycles while singing. What a workout!

KJ - this is the Karaoke DJ. He runs the karaoke system, and gets everyone involved. He adjusts the player to alter the key or the pitch to better match the voice range of the singer, and adds some echo, so that everyone sounds more professional.

Kamikaze Karaoke - In Kamikaze Karaoke, the KJ will choose a pitch number for you, and you have to try to sing the song in that pitch.

Hitokara - means you must sing the song alone.

Karamovie - movie video clips where they leave out the voices

Health Benefits:

And here is great news - karaoke singing releases endorphins! Those are the “happy hormones” that make us feel good!

In addition, singing releases stress and tension, and helps exercise the lungs. So the next time you want to head off to your local karaoke bar, you can feel good about it!

Newest Types of Karaoke Player:

Now you can get Karaoke Ipods, Cell Phones, and DVD Player/Karaoke System combos. China has a Karaoke car. Japan, and now spreading to other countries, has Karaoke Boxes - system/sound-insulated rooms.
