Cell Phones in Great Britain - Will Your Cell Phone Work?

Monday, September 8th, 2008

As the international business world continues to become smaller, many people are traveling to various countries much more often than they have in the past. If you are planning to visit Great Britain and wish to have the use of your cellular phone, there are a few factors that may determine if it will work or not.

Like most other European countries, Great Britain

Cell Phones in Spain - SIM Card is the Best Option

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

In recent years, Spain has become a travel destination for business people and tourists alike. If you are planning a trip to this beautiful country and wish to have the use of a cell phone, there are a few things that you will need to know.

If you wish to use the cellular phone that you currently have while you are in Spain, chances are that it will not work. This inability is due to differences in operating systems and the frequencies that are used in most European countries. Most American cellular phones operate with third generation technology that is known as WCDMA (Wideband Code multiple Access), which is not yet available in many other countries. These areas operate under the GMS (Global System for Media Communications) system, which is second generation technology.

These GMS cellular phones are still available from certain service providers, such as AT&T and Verizon, but they also must be adaptable to work with the different frequencies in Spain as well. In most of North America, cell phones use frequencies of 850 and 1900 while European countries use 900 and 1800. If you decide to purchase a GMS phone in the United States, you will need to make sure that it will function using these differing frequencies.

If you do have a GMS cellular phone that will work while you are in Spain, you will probably have to use the roaming feature when placing telephone calls. As these types of call can cost over $1 per minute, this can be quite expensive if you are planning to use your cellular phone regularly.

The least expensive option that will enable you to use your cell phone while Spain is to purchase a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) once you arrive in the country. In order to use this type of card, you will need to unlock your present phone or purchase an unlocked one. To unlock your present device, you can contact your present cell phone provider, although many companies are unwilling to do this as it means a loss of revenues for them. Luckily, there are many Websites that you can visit that can help you to complete this process on your own.

One you have arrived in Spain, you can purchase a SIM card with a small amount of minutes on it. You can then add minutes as you need them. These cards have a variety of packages available, starting at $20 US. You will then be able to take advantage of the less expensive rates that are offered by the Spanish cell phone providers.

Some of the advantages offered by the Spanish SIM cards include free incoming calls and international calls for approximately $0.10 US per minute. Voicemail is also available with these types of plans and you will not need to sign a contract or be sent a monthly bill. You will also receive a new Spanish phone number (keeping your own is not an option).

So if you are traveling to Spain and wish to have a cell phone, a GMS cellular phone and a Spanish SIM card is an expensive way to keep in touch with friends, business associates, and loved ones.

Cell Phone Usage in France

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

If you are planning to travel to France and wish to have the use of a cellular phone, there are several features that your phone will need to have to ensure that is will be compatible with the French cellular system.

Like many other European countries, France still uses the GMS, which stands for the Global System for Mobile communications. As this system is second generation cellular technology and North America uses third generation, your regular cell phone may not be compatible. Many service providers still offer GMS phones upon request, so you may need to purchase one of these types specifically for your overseas travel.

You will also need to check with your service provider to ensure that your GMS cell phone can function using the 900 and 1800 frequencies that is also prevalent in Europe. The Untied States uses the 850 and 1900 frequencies.

To use your cell phone in France, you will need to switch the setting to the

Cell Phone Usage in Italy

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

If you are planning a trip to Italy, you may be wondering if your cell phone will work in that particular country. The truth is that your phone has less than a 50% chance of functioning due to the different frequencies that we use in this country. In Europe, GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) phones use 900 and 1800 frequencies. In Canada and North America, we use 1900 and 850. So even if you have a GSM phone, it is probably not designed to be compatible with these European frequencies.

Many newer cellular phones that are now available on the American market may be functional in Italy, although this will also depend on the company that provides your cell phone service. Many providers do not carry GSM phones, such as Sprint, Nextel, and Verizon. Some of these businesses do have phones that they rent or sell that may work in this foreign country. If they do provide these international phones, you need to ensure that they function with both 900 and 1800 frequencies or you may find that you will not be able to use these devices in most parts of the country. You also will probably pay an additional fee that will allow you to use your

Cell Phone Usage in Russia

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

If you are planning to travel to Russia, you may be wondering if your cell phone will work in that particular country. To begin with, your phone must be the GMS (Global System for Mobile communications) type. As many American providers do not carry these phones regularly, you may have to contact yours in order to rent or purchase one. As with many other countries, the Russian cellular phone system operates using the 900 and 1800 frequencies. Since the United States and Canada use the 1900 and 850, you will need to make sure that the GMS phone that you have can operate at these particular frequencies.

Once you have obtained a phone that is compatible with the Russian phone system, you will need to contact your service provider to make sure that you have a

Cell Phone Terminology - The ABCs of Cellular Phones

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

If you are planning to take a trip overseas and want to know if your present cell phone will work, you will need to know the meaning of a variety of cell phone terms. Most of these definitions deal with cell phone networks and the types of phones that can be used with them.

One of the first terms that you may run across is AMPS, which stands for Advanced Mobile Phone Service. This type of cell phone service is what is known as 1st generation cell phone technology. While this type of system is no longer used in the United States, a small number of foreign countries still rely on AMPS for their mobile service (although major cities worldwide ceased its operation in 2000).

Simply put, AMPS was the first type of mobile service for cellular phones and was introduced in 1983 by Bell Labs. It was an analog- based system that uses separate frequencies for each individual conversation. Due to this feature, AMPS utilizes much more computer power in handling the rising number of cell phone calls.

There was also a higher occurrence of static and noise when using this operating system, and eavesdropping was possible with the use of a scanner. This eavesdropping can allow an unauthorized person to clone the Electronic Serial Number that defines each cellular phone for billing purposes and can place that information on a number of different cell phones while the owner of the original device pays the bills. Again, this system is no longer used in most countries around the world.

Many countries are now using CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access. This type of system is known as 2nd generation (2G) technology and is based on a digital standard. A CMDA system spreads the transmissions of a particular cell phone call across a wide number of frequencies by using an assigned code that is given to each user.

If a signal is described as being digital, it means that the sound waves, radio waves, and other data in a transmission are translated into a computer binary code, a language that the computers that are involved in making the cell phone call can easily understand. This method requires much less computer power than the AMPS systems, and the cell phone calls themselves are much sharper and clearer. A type of this 2nd generation mobile service is a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), which is a European system that is widely used in many countries overseas.

Lastly, there is 3rd generation (3G) technology that is known as WCDMA, which stands for Wideband Code Division Multiple Access. This system uses wideband digital radio communications that allows the transmission the Internet, multimedia features, videos, and a variety of other applications that demand more computer capacity. Though these 3rd generation systems are fast becoming the systems of choice for many cell phone service providers in the Untied States, many foreign countries do not provide availability to them as of yet.

Knowing the terminology that describes cellular phone operations can help you to determine if your cell phone will function in another country. You can check with the cell phone providers that are located in the country that you are planning to visit or find any information that you may need via the Internet.
